MSU Extension dietitian joins diabetes prevention network

MISSISSIPPI STATE, Miss. -- A Mississippi State University Extension Service instructor has joined a statewide network dedicated to helping prevent diabetes and improving the health of Mississippians.

Qula Madkin, MSU Extension registered dietitian nutritionist, recently accepted an invitation to join the Diabetes Prevention and Management Network, which focuses on educating people about strategies that can help prevent type 2 diabetes.

“I am excited about this opportunity because the network aligns closely with the diabetes prevention, nutrition education and chronic disease work we are doing in Extension,” said Madkin, who is also a certified diabetes care and education specialist.

“Participating in the network will provide valuable opportunities to connect with other professionals, learn about emerging strategies and resources and identify potential collaborations that could strengthen our programming,” she said.

The network is comprised of healthcare professionals, public health leaders, researchers, community organizations, advocates and other key stakeholders. Members aim to reduce health disparities by expanding evidence-based prevention programs, promoting healthy lifestyles and informing research and policy.

“Qula has worked hard to educate Mississippians about diabetes,” said Daniel Peterson, head of the MSU Department of Biochemistry, Nutrition and Health Promotion. “Her invitation to join the Diabetes Prevention and Management Network is evidence that her program is having an impact.”

Madkin earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nutrition from MSU and is pursuing her doctorate. She has more than 22 years of experience spanning community health, private practice and academic environments.

She has also completed advanced training through the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s Adult Weight Management Program.
